In the United States, employment contracts are ”at will,” which means that either the employer or the worker can terminate the contract at any time for almost any reason. Perhaps the most important aspect of wage negotiations is the level of preparedness by the potential employee. Background research on comparable salaries will help potential staff understand the appropriate range for this position. Evaluation of alternative offers already received by the potential employee can contribute to the negotiation process. Research on the company itself will help determine where concessions can be made by the company and what can be considered an off limit. These and other items can be organized into a negotiation planning document that can be used in evaluating offers received by the employer. When the government`s macroeconomic policy has a negative impact on these ”modal” incomes or wage categories, policies are often adapted to protect this group of income recipients. This is part of the calculations of the ISM Manufacturing Index. Although the collective agreement itself is not applicable, many of the negotiated terms relate to wages, conditions, leave, pensions, etc. These conditions are included in a worker`s employment contract (whether the worker is unionized or not); and the employment contract is of course applicable. If the new conditions are not acceptable to individuals, they may be contrary to their employer; but if the majority of workers have agreed, the company will be able to dismiss the complainants, usually unpunished. If, in a given year (52 weeks), if a worker does not earn enough bonuses or incentives to retain his or her exempt status, the ministry authorizes the employer to make a ”catch-up payment” for a salary period from the expiry of the 52-week period.
